Banisteriopsis Caapi is a South American hallucinogenic vine in the Malpighiaceae plant family, and is well recognised as a main ingredient of the famous sacred drink called 'ayahuasca' along with the plant  Psychotria viridis.

Caapi (sometimes called Ayahuasco), a tropical vine of the order Malpighiales, with the leaves of the chacruna plant (Psychotria viridis). Alternatively, the leaves of certain other plants, most notably the chagropanga plant (Diplopterys cabrerana), may be used.

Banisteriopsis caapi is the basic ingredient of ayahuasca, a psychotropic plant tea used in the Amazon for ritual and medicinal purposes, and by interested individuals worldwide. caapi preparations show antidepressant activity, a therapeutic effect that has been linked to hippocampal neurogenesis. Here we report that harmine, tetrahydroharmine and harmaline, the three main alkaloids present in B. caapi, and the harmine metabolite harmol, stimulate adult neurogenesis in vitro.
